Buying a used car as a present owner/insurance question

Hi All

I`d like to buy my wife a used car for her birthday. Wanting it to be a surprise, whats the best way of registering and doing the insurance when I pick it up.
I was considering of putting it all in my name, partly because the insurance is cheaper anyway.

Thanks all

Register it in her name and buy a days temp insurance to pick it up. Is your wife going to be the main driver?

Insure and register it in whoevers name you want. As long as you give the insurance the correct information and declare the main driver etc.

Dont put the wife as owner if its in your name.

Yes she will be the main driver.

So if I register it in her name I could use my own insurance to drive it back, i`d have to double check i`m insured on other vehicles.

    Thanks

Just buy a days insurance cover, £25ish - take the paperwork with you.

Put in whoevers name you like but keep it in that name, so you wont lose out on the VED when you change over registered keepers.

With many (but not all) driving other vehicle clauses in insurance it stipulates the vehicle must have its own insurance in place. Check your wording very carefully.

As others have said day insurance may be easier.

ok thanks. I`ve got a quote for insurance with me as a named driver.
Question is when we do the V5C it will require a signature from the new keeper. If its going to be my wifes car how can i get around this if she isnt present?

    Thanks

The V5c can be done online at the dealers.
  • Just write her name in the signature space? I've done it before and never had any comeback.

Tax dies with a change of ownership. Again you need to do it online before you drive away.
