Oooh I love it when I get to teach Z something :)

A drummer plays a drum kit (without stating the obvious) but the only extras he/she plays would be a few bits and bobs, like shakers, tambourines, etc which are around the kit.

A percussionist plays loads of toys (I'm a bit of a frustrated percussionist) everything from congas to chimes xylophones and djambe... you name it, I've even seen them play fruit. He/.she will usually have a bunch of crashes/splashes and a snare. But not usually a full drum kit. The percussionist is usually standing up surrounded by his toys, where as the drummer is sitting snugly behind her safety blanket.

I love playing percussion, I found the other day that I can get a great sound from my nail extensions... run them against eash other and it's cool. I'm always tapping and getting sounds out of objects. But as percussion goes I'm not very good.

    What makes you say that?

I quite like Pink Floyd - not all their stuff, but Comfortably Numb has got me through a few bad days! It's pretty amazing.

Well I've got the Division Bell going round in my car at the moment, a very good album.

My musical tastes are very varied. Everything from opera to Rammstein...

    Don't like house/dance/rap though...

It depends what mood I'm in really - if I'm in a nightclub and in a 'lets get drunk and dance till 3am' mood, then I don't mind a bit of dance music, but I wouldn't sit and listen to it on the radio - and opera I don't mind live, but wouldn't sit at home and listen to it. But generally I like stuff like Lou Reed, or heavier stuff like Metallica, or charty indie-rocky-sort of stuff.

I've got a set of congas here which do come out a fair bit, but my sound isn't great. Plus I only have about half a dozen tricks I can do on them which I fit to most tunes :D

A good percussionist will play with two sticks in one hand doing something flashy on a xylophone or something, while doing something totally different with a pair of sticks in the other hand. Drums are equally hard don't get me wrong, a percussionist can't usually play the refined kind of stuff a good drummer can, unless they played drums to start with. Things like getting a nice shuffle can take people years to perfect, it's not something you can teach, it's just learning your own art I guess.

I've seen some proper latin percussion which just makes my head spin, I could never be that good as much as I'd love to be. Drummers have to have great independance (each arm and leg able to do different things at the same time) but those guys take to to a stupid level.

Talking of odd taste in music, I love most things apart from anything made on a computer! I'm right into people like Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney and Joe Nichols at the moment, purely because the level of musicianship is something we don't see in the UK sadly. Now you see why I bought a house in Nashville :)
