Multiple bank charges help

Hi all
We need help. 2009 my partner went overdrawn by accident, not by much, but the Halifax charged her £35. Now if that's where it ended I would be happy, but she couldn't afford to pay so switched banks so her child benefits wouldnt be taken by bank charges. Anyway, this account wasn't used again and the bank was told it would get the money asap. But they added charge after charge onto the account, we went to citizens advice for help, but the bank still placed more £35 charges onto the account. They finally stopped when the account got to £740 overdrawn, 610 of charges. Can we do anything about this? The bank sent the debt to a collection agency she pays £1.50 a month of the debt, it's down to 620, but 610 of that is all the charges. We don't want to pay charges if we don't have to.

    What are you asking for?

You can't complain about bank charges being unfair as the banks won the court case. You have organised a payment plan and are paying a token sum back.

The problem, like it or not, was that she ignored the charge - £35 at the time she could have asked nicely and if a first offence it would probably have been refunded, instead she didn't pay it or ask for a payment plan but instead moved accounts and because no payment was made the bank gave it to debt collectors.

Debt collectors are not exactly nice people but as they probably bought the debt for a few pennies in the pound, offering a payment of say 50% of the total as a lump sum might make them close it off. Or at least that's a starting point, increase it to say 60% or whatever and see what they will take

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Basically, you will have to continue paying the £1.50 a month until the debt is paid. It's such a nominal sum it will barely be missed, but it will take over 34 years.

Don't know why as this cannot be undone. It can be ignored and a debt listed in the persons name but you cannot quash this.

I personally don't respond to personal messages from strangers. Please use the forum for enquiries.

However, I expect it's "Nasqueron" who will have received a pm about making an offer to the Debt Collectors..
