How to check if a dongle is unlocked?

Hi
I've been given a "three" ZTE MF730M dongle.
Is it possible to check whether this is locked to their network?
On three's website it says dongles supplied by them during the last few years are already unlocked.
Is there a way to determine this (eg from the IMEI number), or is the only way to put in a SIM card from another network to see if it works?
