Have the car tax changes been publicised enough?

I ordered a new car yesterday which they said they would ensure would be registered before April 1st.

I didn't know the reasoning for this until I read about the car tax changes.

Had I gone in a few weeks later and not beaten the April deadline it would cost me an extra £120 a year in road tax - Pure luck that I ordered it in time so as not to pay the extra.

Clearly not, as there are still people who are unaware :D

(I live in a cave, and only watch cartoons and re-runs of old detective series, and even I know about it ;))

Yes. It has been mentioned often enough.

They could have warned people 10 years ago there will always be someone that didnt know.

Look at the parking threads where people say they ignored them because thats what they were told to do, when was that changed, 5 years ago?

Your car will depreciate 10 years worth of tax in a few weeks so whats the worry over £120?

They've been discussed on here, and other forums, ad nauseam.

Plus TV, newspapers, car mags .....

I agree. I've seen many newspaper articles about it.

And in the big scheme of running a car, the road tax is one of the cheapest things. Depreciation is the killer.

I suggest you listen to the budget on 8th March for other changes - perhaps for diesels.
  • Don't buy a new car. Simple

Bad advice on so many levels. Off the top of my head :-
    • Buying new might not be the correct answer for everyones situation, however you cant simply apply a blanket "dont buy new" across all requirements as being the right answer.
    • If noone / less people buy new it would drive the price of used cars up. A buoyant new car market means a good supply of cheap used down the line.
    • There are many finance deals that make financing a new car no more expensive that financing a used one
    • There are merits in buying new - manufacturers warranty, you get the spec you want, you get the latest (usually more economical) model, you're almost guaranteed to have no adhoc maintenance bills.
    • Often buying new means you can get a big discount, sometimes negating most or all of the "savings" of buying nearly new
    • Buying new usually means you can get a manufacturer incentivised finance scheme - usually at a low rate / 0% or with a large manufacturer contribution.

Then where would we get our cars from?
We'd end up like Cuba, except instead of driving fantastic looking 50s Americana, we'd be stuck in patched up 2017 euroboxes :(

I went in with the intention of having a look/test drive and buying a pre-reg one I had seen elsewhere.
The deal I got made a brand new one on a 17 plate cheaper than some of the pre-reg ones I had been looking at.
