You can pick up 4 bed detached houses in Leeds for under £350k. There are LOADS of them. In my village in south herts, you'd need to find £575k (And that seems oddly cheap as the next available house is £700k)
I could move to Leeds and keep my salary identical... I don't want to though!
But I think 380k for a terraced house in the north that only has shared land is ridiculous! Whereas I think the 450k I paid for mine, which is easily commutable to London, is very reasonable.
Not one of the 4 bed detached houses currently available in Leeds has comparable garden and living space and is in an area where I'd actually consider living.0 -

It's amazing what a bit of water does (when it's contained within a hole at least)
On the whole though, yes it's a lot cheaper. You do get way more bang for your buck up here. Downside... jobs, salaries, lack of govt spending on stuff like public transport/libraries/healthcare/anything, rain, water not contained in holes, cold, lack of variety in restaurants, an overabundance of home bargains/aldi/lidl/iceland/B&M etc

I live in a large northern city where in the good areas, an average size 1930s 3 bed semi will cost between £350k - £400k, but a 20 min drive across the city and the same size house will cost a quarter of the price.0

You don't need to live in a big city to see these kinds of house variations. If I could pick my house up and move it 800m as the crow flies on to a different street I could double it's value. Similarly If I moved it a mile in the opposite direction I could nearly half it's value, all within a town which is 3 miles acrossIt may sometimes seem like I can't spell, I can, I just can't type0 -

We live in the North West and the prices in our area have risen in the last few years. Our house was purchased in 2013 and we have done substantial works, plus a two storey extension. When all the work was completed we were told the valuation, and we were just breaking even. Fast forward a few years and comparable properties are now changing hands for around 50k to 60k more than what we spent in total.
Indications are the prices here are going to continue to rise. The key to this is the recent and continued investment that is taking place by several large companies. The local high street has the same issues are any, however a few decent new names have opened up. Plenty of new housing is being built (none really affordable), most new ones start at 250k minimum.
The local council and a development fund is attempting to kickstart private funding for a marina project that is to include to housing, restaurants etc.
I guess as others have said, you just need to pick the area that suits whatever you are looking for.0 -

I'm from Leicester (still champions) and bought my first house there in '98, £50k for a 3 bed semi. Sold it two years later for £100k and moved to Brighton to a 2 bed flat for £121k, now going for £250k
I have 11.6 years to go on the mortgage and in 12 years I'll be 55 when I shall sell up, move back, buy 4 bedroom house and another one somewhere hot and that's me done, retired. Have looked at Lincs as amazing value.0 -

Same here. You could move my house a mile so that it was just inside the New Forest National Park instead of just outside and increase its value from 450 to 600 with no trouble at all.You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.0
