Basic PAYG mobile that will work in USA

Last year on a visit to San Francisco neither of our basic Samsung phones with EE would work. Not compatible it would seem although roaming was ON.

Which BASIC (call + text) phones are compatible with USA networks?

Make sure it has 3G capability as 2G doesn't work there anymore.
Some European 3G phones don't have any American frequencies (850/1700/1900) too x
