  • thanks and wow! that sounds awesome and totally the kind of thing I'd love to do. But we will have a lot of people travelling a long way and would they come if it wasn't a proper sit down? (suppose we could put that on the invites then totally up to them) as what you've described is much more B and I. Only fly in ointment is we can't do next summer so not sure that picnic would work in november!! We do actually have a garden big enough for that and to get hog roast/bbq people in so I guess maybe if we did august......

I am def thinking about that now!!!

Vets was £52.60/2 and we won't get that back as at top of policy limit. Cat is ok, needs to continue with ear drops for another few days then hopefully he's ok and no more visits!!!!

luckily weather was poo so friend didn't want to go out and had got food in so didn't have to spend anything!

Have also told B I'd prefer take out so going to pick him up at 6 and he will go in and get the pizzas. Then he can have his before he goes out and I will save mine to enjoy when he's gone out! I'll drop him back into town (as is only 5 mins drive and can go in my slack pants) and he will get taxi home.

Really enthusiastic now about the idea of having a reception in our garden!!!!
  • Why am I here? Well, I used to have NO clue about money (I really think they should teach you what the heck an interest rate is at school and what credit cards and store cards actually mean and charge!) and was in a LOT of debt through university and my early to mid-20's. I had no clue what an interest rate was and instead just saw credit and store cards as "free" money. Often missed payments, not cos I couldn't pay (though this did become more of the case towards the end of the bad spell!) but just cos I wasn't organised and didn't realise what impact they had! Makes me sick to the stomach when I think of all the money I wasted over the years. - At 27, I am currently in the midst of this! Feel exactly same - I’m glad there is someone else who has experienced this!

I constantly worry about money (which BD doesn't understand) and the future and whether we will have enough in retirement. - Ditto with my boyfriend!

we have budgeted £150 (which I know is a lot) - wow that is a lot! Our food bill is £60 a week.

Thank you for sharing, just think about the homes you have, that will be a huge help. I can't even face the prospect of trying to save for a house yet.

hey seashell - at least you can see it now - 27 is still v young which means you can change your ways (and being on MSE is the first step!). Yeah, it is quite a bit but we are managing to get that down quite a bit now. This week should be relatively cheap. You'll get there with the house as well, once you've paid down all debt.

So, god, this whole wedding thing is doing my head in. Mentioned to my mum yesterday we were thinking of eloping and she went mental. It's not about her though, it's about what B and I want to do. We went through costs to have something in our garden and the problem is we cannot guarantee weather so would have to have some sort of marquee. We also wouldn't want 60-70 people tramping through the house to use bathroom so would need loo hire, table hire etc etc. It worked out not that far off having it where we have currently booked, plus hassle of setting it up etc and annoying neighbours. So we have decided that is a no go.

However, what we have done is found a venue we like more and have cut the numbers to absolute minimum (which means a few noses will be out of joint - my parents friends were first casualties!) and we've knocked it down now to around £12,000 (which I know is still HUGE but much better). Think my dad may give us £3,000 which means £9,000 to find between now and next Sept. If we eloped (looking at packages etc) we'd still be around £2,000 I reckon so that brings it down to £7,000 which is much more reasonable and I do really want to wear the nice dress etc
  • Erm, so we went away for the weekend and on Friday B proposed!!!!!!!!

    Absolutely over the moon!!!!!!!!!

    Congratulations :j:T:j

    thanks purple mum!!!!

Found out we have got planning permission for our change of use from agricultural land!! Didn't think we'd get it. But that's great! Doesn't add value as such to the house but adds desirability and means that it will be easier to get planning for an extension if we ever want one (not that we could afford that now!!).

Going to see the new venue we like at 11. Seeing if they can do a hog roast/bbq as a 3 course sit down isn't really us.

Got to do big shop today though we shouldn't go over £40 I don't think

So, other venue a bit naughty. On their website they say £65 a head (but that includes everything) so we got numbers to under 50. Then when we rocked up they said there is a minimum spend of £7000!!!!! That will include anything the guests spend on booze but !!!!!!. Spoke with my dad and he is wanting to pay that. I feel like he can't. I know they can afford it (they are not rich people but they were very sensible with money throughout their lives - they have 2 properties fully paid off and my dad gets around 40k in pension a year as he was a deputy head for years, my grandma (who was quite rich) left my mum a whack when she died, and my dad wins around 8k a year on the horses) but it makes me feel incredibly guilty. Their view is that I would only get it when they pop their clogs anyway so better to have it now before tax (esp as you can gift money for a wedding tax free) but I just feel awful about it. B is now being a bit annoying and adding loads of people on for the evening, almost like he's got a free licence now that my dad is paying. I would rather limit it.

So, today I walked to work and back to increase fitness and save cash (though didn't really save as B had to be in at 7 and so drove!). Took food from stores.

Expense of £21.50 on a bottle of pink fizzy stuff and chocolates for a lawyer in UK who sorted out the almighty mess on my london flat for me. So, you might recall I was trying to extend the leasehold on it which I did and cost me almost 50k. When my then lawyers came to register the extension, they were told by the Land Registry they couldn't because of a weird equitable charge on my title. They eventually got it registered but the weird charge remained. I pulled the file from when I bought the property in 2003 and it was on the title then, even after I had bought it, but the lawyer (yet another paralegal!!) advising me, didn't advise me of it!!!

So, that firm had been absorbed by someone else and I rang the new firm and asked for a copy of my file. They no longer had it. So I explained what had happened and the lady said she would try to sort it out for me. 2 months passed and she had been told by the LR they would not remove the charge so I had a real worry on my hands as that property is effectively my pension! So last Thursday I instructed another lawyer, who didn't sound too hopeful that it would be easy to sort. I mentioned it to the lady and said I'd give her another month to sort it - not being nasty at all but just explaining I couldn't let it drift.

I have been SO worried about it (literally waking up in the middle of the night and thinking about it) and today she rang to say the LR have removed the charge!!!! So, given she hasn't charged me (because otherwise it would've been a claim against her firm as it was their predecessor screwing up) I thought it only right to send her a gift as a thank you. So another £21.50 down!
  • NSD! Walked to and from work so saved petrol money. Didn't leave the office at lunchtime and took chicken and salad wrap and hob nob bars from stores. Dinner from stores tonight is belly pork, sweet potato wedges (made by B) and some form of veg.

Really exhausted at the moment. So will probably be in bed around 830! House of Cards on Netflix before that = essentially free entertainment.

B is to london tomorrow so will be back late. He's not really looking forward to it!!!
  • Raining cats and dogs here so driving in - petrol money but otherwise will be soaked.

Going to take a wrap from stores. B won't be back until around 9 tonight so have chicken and mushroom risotto (home made) out of freezer for tea. Got him some out as well in case he's not eaten and if he has, he can take it for lunch tomorrow.

Hoping that day should be NSD as given rain I won't be going out at lunch! Though we do need milk - bummer!!!

Have lunch with my maid of dis-honour tomorrow and treating my MIL 2B to lunch friday as she is coming wedding dress shopping with me. I swear all we spend our money on is supermarket shops and eating out! Suppose it's better than crack!!!
