Distance selling regs for Europe

Hi, some time ago I ordered a "Fairphone". I have an email receipt from 18 Jan. I did read at the time that it wouldn't be delivered for a while. At the bottom of my email receipt, it says it will be delivered by 31 May. Basically I got sick of waiting and bought another phone.
So now I want a refund on this one, but I haven't got a clue what my rights are because (1) it hasn't actually been delivered and (2) they're based in Amsterdam.
I know that for the UK, I'm covered by distance selling regulations but I thought this applies only when you've actually received the item, so what happens if it's still on order and you haven't received it? And what happens if the item comes from outside the UK?
Thanks in advance.

Tell them you want to cancel, if they say no, wait til you receive it, then send it back, it's the same 14 days, it's EU rule.

JJ Egan, I bought it from the Fairphone website itself.
Atasas, thanks for the review but hopefully I won't need it cos I'm not going to use the damn thing. I must have been temporarily in cloud cuckoo land to think that I could need it enough to order in January but hang on until May to receive it.
Boatman, thanks a lot. I will try emailing them again but if the worst comes to the worst, I know now I can just send it back when it gets here. Thanks again.
Cheers all!!0
