Ok, my car is MOTd to 27th Feb, and i've its MOT booked for 4th March. (its a retest on a corroded brake pipe, now sorted, will pass).

The tax expires on 28th Feb.

I went to tax the car and of course i cant because there will be no MOT on it, on the first day of the taxing period.

The car wont be driven once the MOT expires until the day its being driven to the MOT centre and will go straight there. Once its passed MOT i'll be taxing it for the period March -> Aug (6 months).

SO - do i need to SORN it on 1st March, then take it off SORN / retax it on the 4th?

Will they whinge / will i get an automatic fine OR is there a grace period built in whereby they wont track / pick up on it.

From memory, its a couple of weeks before they start hounding you for a SORN or TAX?

You will be OK. I expect your insurance rums out on the 28th, don't forget to renew that.

If you SORN it online and tax it online you will be 100% ok.

You can tax it now before MOT expires, but you'll lose month of tax, new tax will start begin Feb, will end end of next Jan & overlap with old tax.

Even then, you won't have problem for at least a month.

Daft thing is, when you do tax it, it'll be charged from the first of the month anyway.

*Note:I've just done a bank account switch which completed today, my 'car tax' DD is payable on the first of each month. Received an email from DVLA today, advising they will take next months payment on March 10th (this is obviously because DDs take 10 days or more to set up)

So technically, I wont be taxed for the first 10 days of March but they state (in bold):
You do not need to wait for the payment to be taken before the vehicle is used on the road.
A bit of common sense at last . . .

You should have had tax renewal reminder, so you should be able to tax it ok now with no loss, tax starting March.

If you do SORN it then do it before the 27th.

After declaring SORN online you can't tax online for 5 days. System just says no if you try.

True - hadnt thought of that.

I sorned it this morning there - i expected it to be a faff but its straighforward enough (surprisingly)

Car is in my garage at home at min, up for MOT retest sat morn, so it'll be only driven there and back, then taxed.

Thats the point - i couldnt. You have to have valid MOT on at least the first day of the taxing period.

The MOT expired yesterday (27th Feb) so couldnt get it taxed from 1st March
