Can till people see card details on transactions?

Just a routine question. When you pay for stuff on card at any store. Can the counter till person see the card details on their terminal IE name of the card etc?

I just wondered what till people can see on the terminal if anything? Sometimes my partner gets me to use her card for certain purchases when she isn't present. Just wondered if the till person could see this, nothing ever been said!

  • Not when I worked in retail, many years ago now!

We just pressed a button on the till which activated the card machine. You would not see any card details on the till.

All the details are on the traders receipt. The card holders receipt had the numbers XXXX out. So yes the retailer does get to see all the details.

You appear to be answering a question that was never asked.

It can also depend on the equipment being used. If a shop is using a separate PDQ machine then it may print a customer copy and a store copy which will in all likelihood have the card details on it. The roll operator then retains this receipt and puts it somewhere (in the till etc). So yes, they may be able to access/see your card details.
  • If the till operator is alert, they won't need to see account details on the terminal in order to identify that the card is not being used by the cardholder because the card itself shows the sex of the customer.

However, as long as the correct PIN number is used, I can't see there ever being a problem with the OP using their partner's card.

The receipt does not show personal details such as name etc, it has the card number which is starred out, apart from (normally) the last 4 digits.

The only way the till operator would know the name on the card (or sort code and account No) is if they were to take hold of the card and read it. That info is not displayed on the terminal screen, which is what the op asked.

    Thanks for the replies people.
Basically, it's this if I use or return something on my partners card. Does this information display on there screen if the card is a Ms, Miss or Mrs etc?

I had a mate who done this at Dunelm. Originally bought the item on his partners card. Went to return the item. The counter staff asked to view the card physically, then spotted it was a females card. All the rules kicked off IE only can refund to a person who owns the card present (even though the actual card which made the purchase was present)!

I have to return an item this week on my partners card to a different retailer. She hasn't got time, I have. Though if I encounter this rules thing. I am going to be annoyed. So just want to know can the operator see this info (or will they care) as Dunelm do!

I find it difficult to understand why you are going to be annoyed if/when a shop assistant spots this.

Return the goods as you plan to do.
If the refund is refused, then your partner will have to find the time to return later.
If the return is accepted then consider yourself lucky.
