Taxis are cheap but like everywhere they'll rip you off if you let them. Uber is available at least in KL and Penang (probably all the other major destinations too), you'll still get ripped off but can get refunded through the app.
Uber is only available in a very few places. And in many places taxi drivers will refuse point-blank to drive you unless you agree to a fixed price. In Melaka the only way round this is to take the bus (a taxi driver at the bus station there told me which bus to take rather than agreeing any reduction in the price he wanted); I understand that it is the same on Langkawi. On Tioman transport is by boat ("water taxi") and I cannot believe that Uber operates in this way!0 -
Yeah, it's behavior like that which makes me really hate getting taxis. You can sometimes get around it by walking some way away from the main tourist areas but appreciate this isn't always practical.
Uber claim to be available in Melaka, quite possibly a recent addition.0
