Anyone used Uber while in USA

I've seen a lot of people say they've simply downloaded the Uber app and that was that.
I am going to New York with my kids and my husband isn't coming along. So I'm wondering is Uber quite safe and reliable. And is the money taken from a card I link to their account ?
Do you tip them by cash or is it taken by card?
Just any experience of anyone who has used it and how you found it ?
Seems they have really great prices !:rotfl:

I used Uber in San Francisco and Las Vegas. Generally great - did have one ride where the driver wasn't where the app told me he was and instead had to flag down a cab to get to an event. Its the same as app as you use in the UK, just assign a card and it all happens via the app. Tipping can be done in person, but isn't expected.

Used Uber to get back into Manhattan from a car hire drop off somewhere over the George Washington bridge on the Jersey side, It was about 1/3 price of a cab and no tip expected although a couple of $ was appreciated. For registering and using as new users we got a discount of something like $10 off the first ride too. I would recommend 100%.Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.0
