Hello - following a series of traumatic events I went into free fall and messed up my financial life. In 2015 I went into 5 months arrears on my mortgage and therefore serious issues. However, with their help and getting my life on track, paying extra on my monthly payments, increasing it when I can. My credit file has been marked AR since then and I realize that impacts on my score but nevertheless my score has been creeping up in the right direction. In October 2016 my employers informed my that salaries where delayed and rather than the 25th month we would not be paid but would be by 5th Nov latest. I rang my mortgage provider straight away as my payment was due 31st Oct and they were very understanding and helpful, giving me to 5th Nov. They assured me all would be ok and not worry. I was able to pay it on 1st Nov, just 1 day late and was very relieved. End Nov my score plummeted with my score changing markers from AR to 5 (in arrears). I wrote to mortgage company to express my concern and ask why this had happened. I was brushed off and told they had every right and I was late, end off. I contacted Financial Ombudsman, provided them with copy of my Credit File. I thought it very unfair of mortgage company to do this as I had called them to advise of late payment, it not being me and it turned only to be 1 day late. Of course the FO took their side, I wasn't surprised by this so I called Mortgage company again last night to see if they could help me. Also, I wanted the numbers explained - For Nov marker is 5, for Dec it's 2, Jan 2 and Feb 1...it doesn't make sense if it refers to months missed. The guy I spoke to last night said it had nothing to do with them that Experian etc do the scores, that how they mark our files has changed, nothing to do with what information they provide but I cannot see this. I am so angry and upset by this. I was feeling ok about slowly moving forward but not it has all crashed down again. Am I wrong? Do I accept that yet again it is my fault and I have to accept what has been done? I understand that this may be confusing so briefly in 2015 I missed 5 months payments, so 5 months in arrears, from Sept 2015 to 30th Sept everything has been on-time but Oct I was ONE day late and then markers changed. Thanks.

  • Your post doesn't make much sense.

What happened with your mortgage payments? Which ones were paid late/missed>
What appears on your credit files?

You seem to be talking about scores (which are fictional and can be ignored) but also markers - eg arrears and missed payments.

Forget the scores and concentrate on what data appears on your file in relation to this account.

They are correct that it's experian making the numbers, you will be the best contact them to see what they mean.

As for late payment marker, it seems you've exhausted your outs there with financial ombudsman finding in their favor. But what worries me is that delay in salary made you miss a mortgage payment which suggests that you have no financial buffer in place for when bad things happen.
You really should consider posting a SOA at debt free wannabe boards, to see if you can save some money every month and build a safety-buffer.

Was your contractual due date for the mortgage the 31st of every month?

With regards to your credit history. The purpose is not to to provide you with a "score", but to inform other users of the state of your finances. If data wasn't reported accurately it would be totally worthless.

I'd be very concerned if my employer couldn't meet the payroll on the contractual date. A sure sign of financial distress.

Not always- I had my salary paid late once when I worked for M&S as their systems went gaga. This was in 2005 and they haven't gone bankrupt yet :D
