Getting Dog to take tablets

One of our dogs has been given antibiotics for a stomach infection. I can't get him to take tablets as he's not eating much. I've tried all the usual things to disguise the tablet, pushed into cheese , butter, cake, chicken and meat juices but he eats the food and spits out the tablet. The vet says it is painful for him to eat. Does anyone have any other suggestions.?

You tried what I do with my cats? Open mouth, shove tablet at back of tongue, let go, they swallow the tablet. Much easier than hopeing they won't notice it in something.
You have to get it right on or they will split it out though. And not easy if the are a mouth clencher. Though a finger in the right places usually fixes that.0 -
Thanks for the quick reply Carrot007. He's very reluctant to have his mouth held open. I'll try when husband gets back from work.0

Yup, that's what I do also. I open mouth with right hand, pop the tablet right at the back of her tongue, close her mouth and stroke her throat. Works a treat.“And all shall be well. And all shall be well. And all manner of things shall be exceeding well.”

I use pate as it sticks to the tablet, I give him a couple of bits with no tablet and then the bit with the tablet in, my dog is an expert at detecting a tablet in anything else. The throat option works as long as you're quick. I hope your dog feels better soon.0

Thank you minimad1970. Good idea.0

It is a shame you cannot have it in liquid form as it is easier to syringe it into the inside of the cheek, hold mouth shut and rub throat to encourage a swallow. Don't however, ever syringe straight down back of throat as he/she could inhale it which would cause other more serious problems0

The throat/neck stroking is supposed to encourage them to swallow. I have problems with my cat, ended up looking on youtube which had some helpful videos. Please do not quote spam as this enables it to 'live on' once the spam post is removed.

Thank you Rosieandjim. I think liquid would have been easier too.
Thanks Money maker, I will look on you tube.
Thanks leslieknope, I will get some of that peanut butter.
I have managed to give him tonight's tablet by pushing it in bits into our other dog's food. Her food has a hole in the middle so pushed it in there and covered with meat juices.
Thank you for the replies.0
