A rise in income tax as long as it is directed to the NHS / social care would be sensible IMHO.
And preferably no more tinkering with the treatment of pensions for a year (or so)0 -
Abolish stamp duty and replace it with a land value tax. Abolish stamp duty reserve tax on share transfers and replace it with a higher tax on capital gains. It makes no sense to tax property by charging a fee at the point of sale/purchase, taking no account of how long people have been in the property.
Crack down on sham self-employment. Or, change how national insurance works so that people are not incentivised to claim sham self-employment to reduce their tax bill.
Reduction in the higher and additional rates of income tax, funded by an increase in property taxes and capital gains tax. I don't think it is sensible to tax the money high earners make from their employment at 45%+NI, while taxing the money they make from capital gains at 28%.

Abolish business rates and substitute a scheme based solely on ability to pay, ie profits.
There is already a method of assessing that in corporation tax - why not just add a percentage supplement and then pass that to local authorities? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
