    Never, ever pay up front. Legitimate builders have accounts with local suppliers so they dont have to pay up front....

    If it's anything like Trust A Trader or the like, they're simply a database of companies/traders where the traders themselves pay for being listed ... certainly not somewhere that is actually "trusted".

    Absolutely. If the trader can't take on the job without you committing a significant sum of money then you should run a mile from them. A small deposit would be reasonable (e.g. 10% of the quote) but anything more than that would have alarm bells ringing for me.

    If the person took the money with no intention of doing the job then it's fraud and the police should be involved.
