The incorrect information on your credit file is in breach of the Data Protection Act, which legislates that any data held must be accurate, which this is not. However, you may still be looking at spending a lot of money for potentially no or little gain following up the legal route
I'm quite sure that the only "legal route" is to complain to ICO which theoretically can fine the CRA for breach of Data Protection Act 1998 c.29 s.1 p. 4, but even that is a far stretch - mistakes happen. Not to mention that OP claim for damages lost most/all merit when he ignored the problem for 5 years and I imagine that this is also now resolved once he contacted the CRAs about the issue.
