DVD playback was never free, the cost of the licence was included in the cost of the O.S. or pre-built system.

This is exactly what I thought would happen when MS declared that Win10 would be the final OS, they've gone down the same route as Apple, charging for everything extra that you want to do.

MS allow you to install a fist full of alternatives to do everything for free from third parties......
People have been using alternatives even when MS provided stuff as part of the OS. It's just become fashionable to moan about it...;)

Eh? Apple dont charge you for OS upgrades or for playing DVDs (though I use VLC as well and have done for years)
