None of that correlates with my experiences at Schipol, maybe it's a particular part of the airport that has problems.

Could be, but I don't intend finding out.

Fwiw, we were flying Garuda from LGW to Jakarta. When I booked online direct with Garuda there was no mention of a stop at Schipol in each direction.

Never again will I fly long haul via any European airport [or Istanbul], that potentially adds hours to an already long journey.

What kind of card? Machines at Schiphol? Was there an extra fee? Useful to know. I haven't needed to buy a ticket myself for years, having a stored value card valid for all NL public transport including mainline rail (OV-Chipkaart). Maybe at Schiphol they've started accepting foreign cards for tickets more.
I think it was a Partnership Mastercard in a machine in the booking hall above the station. I bought an OV-Chipkaart with a top up of 40 Euros I think but I imagine the product would not affect the card acceptance. The OV-Chipkaart is a wonderful system isn't it - the same card for trains, buses or trams.

For the OP only making a return trip they would be better off getting single use tickets rather than paying for a card.

Aye, on the European side of one of the most awesome, must-visit cities in the world.....but apart from the geography, not in Europe.

Am sat in Hanoi's Noi Bai Airport at the moment Great example of how an airport should be.
