Hello All,
I was made redundant on September 30th. My redundancy payout was tax free however i paid a lot of tax on my notice period and bonus which was paid as a lump sum.
it had taken me some time to find a new job which i only started 2 weeks ago and the hr lady mentioned i might be due a tax refund due to being off work for over 4 months.
Are you able to shed some light on this. I have logged into the HMRC website and it says that my estimate income for this tax year is: £39,317 which seems accurate to me.
Looking through my Old employer payslips i have paid a total of: £8115 in tax
so far I've received one pay slip from my new employer which i had paid £347.60 in tax.
i will have one more pay due this tax year which i will pay an estimate of £400 tax.
so total earned: £39317
total tax: £8863 (give or take £20 or so)
i did claim a small amount of jsa which totalled about £230.
i receive no other income or benefits.
do you think i will be due a refund?
your help would be great

Were all of your taxable earnings in your old job included in your P45?
Did you hand in your P45 to the Jobcentre when you signed on?
What were the details on the P45?
Did you receive a P45 from the Jobcentre?
What were the details on this P45?
Did you hand in this P45 to your new employer?0 -
I received a p45 from old employer but they had it a emergency tax month 1.
Since then I have received a new p45 from the jobcentre and have given it to my new employer.
What info do you need? Tax code is 1100l0 -
Yes you will likely be due a rebate.
Did the P45 from JCP include your total pay and tax to date? From your previous employment and JSA?
Did your new payslip reflect the previous pay to date figures?0 -
No all of my p45 are month 1.
Am I right in thinking it could be over £2000?0 -
I'm referring to the pay and tax sections, what do they show?
Probably closer to £3,0000 -
Sections are blank. All it has is my tax code and that's it.
Ok so what do I do. Do I have to wait untill the new tax year to claim the money?
How long do they take to send the cheque0 -
Have you been paid yet by your new employer?
If not how many more salary payments do you expect to get in the current tax year.
Depending on this it may be possible to get your new company to give you the tax refund via your wages which would obviously be quicker than waiting until the tax year ends0 -
Yeah I've had one wage on the 14th. I will receive one more wage on the 14th march.
So how does that work?0 -
Haven't you questioned why youve received blank p45s?0

As you can tell I'm really not to clued up on how these things should be. All I know is that my previous employer paid my final salary using a emergency code. I then received a new p45 from the job centre which only showed my jsa amount as a benefit claim but no previous amount for tax.
I then today received a letter regarding my 2016/2017 tax code and my 2017/2018 tax code. My 2016/17 is 1100l and my 17/18 is 763t. That's when I logged onto the hmrc website and chatted to an advisor who asked some questions and said the the 17/18 was wrong and it's now been change to 1150l.
I mentioned the tax refund and they wouldn't confirm anything and said I would need to wait untill April for them to have my final yearly income so they could work it out. On the hmrc website it is showing my estimated total earnings of £39317 which is including my pay on the 14th march.
I put this through the hmrc tax refund calculator and it came up with £2900.
So how would I claim this through work or if I just wait how long will it likely take for hmrc to send it?0
