Legal Tender only refers to payments that a court must accept by law.
In a shop they are free to accept or deny any form of payment that they decide to. So whether or not the money you handed over was legal tender only matters if they took you to court for payment of the goods.
Agreed, but at the moment they really don't have any genuine reason to refuse to take them so I suspect they have a misunderstanding of the legitimacy of the Elizabeth Fry notes.0 -
You could really confuse them by trying to pay using Scottish bank notes.0

Perhaps OP you should give Poundland a email or Facebook query to ask why one of thier stores is refusing to take legitimate money of the crown.
Perhaps the head office needs to point things out.
What's this particular store going to say about the new £1 coin next month and the old ones. The more I live, the more I learn.
The more I learn, the more I grow.
The more I grow, the more I see.
The more I see, the more I know.
The more I know, the more I see,
How little I know.!!0 -

I have both on Facebook and email,to date no reply from them and as for the "old" £1 coins I will be steering away from Poundland until around mid summer as I hope by then the staff will be trained up to take British money.
I also will wait to see what happens {although I can guess} with the new £10 notes:(0
