then followed your link to Blackviper where I discover it's very bad practice to disable stuff in msconfig
I think you'll find that's referring to "services" (which you should do through services.msc) but no reason why you shouldn't stop the stuff under "startup" tab.
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

Use Ubuntu as an operaing system. It will be much faster on a old computer than windows.

May be true but , user may not want to invest time/effort on learning a new operating system/UI . I have all the time left for me, but I ditched ubuntu about 8 years ago for Mandriva and Solaris then Fedora and of course W7 and W10. Zorin/Mint are also options. Do you have to always push Linux which adds nothing to the OP's problems, can't wait for your input for a question about Ubuntu;)

(Yes sorry, GB of course - I've edited)

Thanks very much for pointers - msconfig startup has Avast, Epson Status Monitor (I installed printer last night), and 3 Intel things, which Google tells me are not particularly esential for my setup so I disabled them - then followed your link to Blackviper where I discover it's very bad practice to disable stuff in msconfig! :rotfl: I've re-enabled them until I have more time to investigate.

I'm not too concerned about disk space yet - it was more the idea that Windows seems so vast that there might be a couple of instant trims like umpteen language modules or similar..

I disable all but trackpad in MSConfig. My machine flys despite being 10 years old and no SSD (yet).

I also go into services, disable any auto updates such as Skype, Flash, 2 x Google Chrome. I also disable 3 Apple services unless I need them, e.g. to backup phone.

Next I go to Task Scheduler and disable any non Microsoft tasks (Google and Apple)

cCleaner is quite good tool for keeping eye out.

Most important thing about windows is to never run day to day as an admin, create a standard user account for day to day, use admin account when you need to do admin tasks.

I read about tuning Firefox to prevent it spoiling SSD, I might consider moving the whole user profiles off SSD (if you have 2nd disk).

I always create pagefile partitions, just a small one 2x ram. I turn off page file on C and set on new partition.

I expect you will have some conflicts of updates on a new build, some updates need to be run by themselves.
