Haven't opened it yet.
I'm wondering if the packaging indicates any reason not too...the dent on the outside box digs into a good 6" of bubble wrap and dead space on that side, so I don't think it did any harm and the inside box is not tampered with so I guess I should take them at their word and test it?

OK bit the bullet. Inside the sealed inner box is another inner box and the gash goes right through:
The laptop itself seems unscathed and boots up fine.
Still not quite sure what to make of it all - perhaps they had to tell me but was the laptop in it when it happened or not?

This looks like two different lots of damage to me. The inner boxes have been damaged by something piercing them, whether or not the laptop was actually inside at the time will be difficult to tell with no marks on the laptop. One thing to check would be the inside of the innermost box on the box wall opposite the damage, if there is damage there too from whatever pierced it then there is no way the laptop could have been inside when it happened or it would have hit the laptop and not the back of the box.
The damage on the outer box looks like courier damage to me, they probably dropped it, the way the box has caved I don't think it was just empty boxed that dropped there was some weight behind it to cause the corner to cave that badly so the laptop would have been in it at the time.0 -
No, there's no damage to the other side of the box. Could have been part of a hammer for example.
How do you think I should proceed?

Is it possible this is the same box they receive the shell in? So when the damage occurred there was no components in the laptop, therefore very little that could be damaged that wouldn't be immediately obvious to them?0

The laptop is supplied in the outer cardboard box as a barebones system with motherboard, into which a preset choice of memory, cpu and hard drive components can be fitted.
The tearing damage occurred to the outer cardboard box AND the inner shiny reseller box so could have been with or without laptop during the build

That's my point really, I don't think there is much value in whether or not the box was sealed given that they seal them. And I imagine they are supplied with the laptops in unsealed retail boxes.
So it's likely they won't just have spare retail boxes kicking around if one gets damaged. I might be wrong, and it really doesn't help you work out what has happened, but it doesn't seem unreasonable that there is nothing dodgy going on here other than the company not wanting to waste a case because of a damaged box.
They could have been clearer in explaining that though if it was the case.0
