Both the CCRs and the DSRs mentioned nothing about customisation.

They do however both talk about 'personalisation'.

I was on the right wavelength despite using an incorrect word :)
  • Generally, the location of the damage on the contents would match up to the relevant damage location on the box ;)

Tbh theres a risk the box could be dropped and not show any signs of damage but a drop like that could (I believe anyway, reasonably competent with computers but not an expert by any means) damage the hard drive. Its what I was alluding to in my post above - that at least they've let you know so you can inspect for signs of damage so I'd be inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt. If they wanted to pass off damaged goods, they would've replaced the box and kept quiet about it imo.

Yes, will most likely give them the benefit. But if it has received a knock It's hard to say when that might manifest itself internally to the machine even if there is no external damage.

Thank you for the comprehensive reply.

I got the customisation part - not sure i understand this bit...?

I would rather not cancel and yes I need a laptop of this specification from somewhere. I paid by CC.

The CCRs are more than just the right to cancel. It also stipulates that certain information needs to be provided to the consumer in a durable medium before the consumer is bound by the contract (the entire list is found in schedule 2 although you'd need to read other sections to see what the requirements are for any given part).

I don't think I linked to the BiS guidance in my previous post so you may find that easier to read to start with.

There is also the business companion guide.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

    Hi all,
Not quite sure what to make of it. Why didn't they just put it in an undamaged box and say nothing - whether the laptop has taken a knock or not?

To address this part, it is possibly because the manufacturer may have added a sticker to the outside of the box that includes the serial number etc. Should you need to return it then they may compare these to ensure it is the correct item in the box (not that that is a necessity of return).

  • Thanks all.

Arrived today, signed for 'Unchecked' as advised.

The seals are unbroken and I haven't opened it yet.

The box damage could have happened with the laptop in it or not so still not sure what to think. There is no serial no. on the outer box. Doesn't look too bad I guess?

That's only the outer box, have you opened it yet, are the contents ok? I don't think that's the damaged box they were referring to, would imagine they were meaning the retail package.

    :) Here's the retail box.

Haven't opened the Laptop box itself yet and yes it does have a chassis serial no. marked empty of CPU/HDD/RAM etc.
