Would you buy a new diesel now?

I do lowish miles sub 12K, but that's all made up of long drives. So diesel works for me and is very economical - modern diesel with DPF. Also bought second hand for a price that was around the same as the cost of petrol versions of same model. So didn't pay a price premium to start with.

I wouldn't buy a diesel if doing lots of short journeys.

I hope that by the time I need to change cars there will be more choice of cleaner but similarly efficient alternatives.

I get an average over the year of just over 60mpg (measured from fill ups)

Depends.
If my use suited one, and i was going to get rid when warranty ran out then yes i'd have a new Diesel without a second thought.

Diesel being this week's demon would probably encourage me to get one, just to annoy those who believe all they read in the mainstream press.

I'll be choosing a new lease car in September, I do around 22,000 miles a year.

My last car was diesel, the current one is petrol and I find I'm spending twice as much on fuel.

For me it will just come down to which is more economical when taking any taxes and fuel costs into account.

Definitely not.
Wouldn't be too worried if I already owned one, but they are clearly going to be phased out now and resale values could be affected and taxes could rise.
