Are you Ok with that sort of diesel mileage if its broken down into fewer longer trips, than lots of short ones?
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Look at Subaru Forester or XV if not too small. They sell in petrol models.

Yes and no. Longer trips will help with the DPF issues, however the extra premium you pay for a diesel over an equivalent petrol wouldn't be worth it. You'd never recover the extra you paid.
  • Many of the larger SUV's come in disel format as the gov encourged car makers to do this years ago

Most larger SUVs require low-end power and torque do the job that's required of them, ie, towing and off-road capability. This is why they use diesel engines, nothing to do with Government encouragement.

My preference is for petrol at the moment as I don't do many miles so the extra hassle and cost of a diesel car isn't worth it, I used to like diesels for being simple and reliable but they're much more complex to meet increasingly tough emissions requirements.

It's quite difficult on the second hand market at the moment as for bigger cars there's far more diesels but looks like it might start balancing out a little.

  • Thanks for all the insights guys. I think petrol is the way to go for me.

I've looked at Mitubishi today. I really liked the ASX but my other half can't get in it! He needs a lot of legroom being 6'4" and the passenger seat didn't go back far enough for him to get in. Disappointing, because I really like the car.

I'm learning towards the Mazda CX-5 but I'm frustrated that they don't do the leather interior on the petrol unless you go top of the range. They do leather in the mid-range in the diesel tho. Grrrrrrr
  • Given what we now know any diesel emissions, purely from a moral point of view, and especially if you have children...

Diesels are not clean cars but nor are petrols, the only genuinely green solution is not to use a car regardless of whether it's diesel or petrol - I'd get a diesel if it suited me and wouldn't care about the emissions because the fact I primarily use a pedal bike for most of my transport is much better for the environment than someone regularly using a petrol car.
