Got a refund from Currys Nov 2016 for an item purchased Nov 2015. Refunded onto a Credit Card with a different number to the one used to make the purchase as Nationwide had replaced the card in June/July 2016.

............In that case they would issue a cheque in name of cardholder.

I don't think the cashiers (or even the managers) in Tesco have the ability to issue a cheque ;)

I wonder how they would get the name of the cardholder from the receipt even if they did!

They don't it is a debit card payment that is linked to an account and any refunds that are credited back to debit cards will just drop into the bank account that the card is held against.

Thanks but I'm not stupid. My post followed on from an earlier one about issuing a cheque if the original.payment card was no longer active!

They wouldn't - it would be forwarded to their appropriate department who would arrange to send out a cheque.
You would not get an immediate refund in this instance.
