Argos Phone without IMEI on Receipt - How to Insure?

I can't be the only person who struggles with this, surely!

I bought a new phone from Argos which was expensive and I want to insure it for accidental damage, theft and loss.

Should be simple, but the Argos receipt doesn't have the IMEI or serial number printed on it, and all the insurance companies I've looked at insist on this or any claims won't be paid out.

Given how many people must buy phones from Argos each year (or other retailers without the IMEI on the receipt) surely there must be a way around this?

Can anyone help? Have you managed to get Argos to add the details in some way, or found an insurance company that doesn't have this requirement?

Huge thanks in advance...

My reading of the OP wasn't that they didn't know the IMEI, but that the insurance company required the IMEI to be on the receipt.
  • It's probably on a label the box.

You're right - I know what the IMEI is, that's not the problem.

It's just that without it being printed on the Argos receipt I can't find an insurer who will cover it.
  • An Argos receipt cannot show the IMEI number because you pay for the phone and get the receipt before the phone is sent down from the stockroom to the shop.

I have bought two phones from Tesco and their receipts don't show the IMEI number either. I am wondering if any shops show such details on receipts and it seems a strange request for an insurer to make unless it's to prevent fraudulent claims for loss.

If you have household insurance could it be added to that ?

Carphone Warehouse certainly quotes IMEI numbers on their receipts and it is almost certainly done to avoid fraudulent claims.

altho a while ago, argo used to print it.
  • Apple Stores even email you a PDF receipt with serial and IMEI on.

    Argos are just box shifters...

As they are a specialist phone shop then it is no surprise. It's probably the same in EE, O2 etc shops.

I wouldn't expect a general merchandise shop to have customised receipts for any product.
