updating my netbook

Options
I have an Acer Aspire One D255, which came installed with Android 2.? and Win7 Starter (since updated to the Win 10 freebie). I have since added Linux mint 17 (so I have 3 OS's).
As the pre installed Android is virtually useless, I would like to replace it with Remix OS.
Can anybody please explain how to do this, so Remix OS replaces the useless android version and I still have Win7 & Linux mint, or point me to a forum etc which would explain the process
Thanks
My £2 savings total for 2007 = £92, for 2008 = £124

    ^^ Haha true dat !!

OP, its just a case of installing it like you normally would, but choosing the android partition as a target so as to overwrite Android currently on there ..

Google is your friend here not sure if such a duff old box has hard disk even but if it does...

First of all I would suggest you take some "ownership". use partition wizard tool to analyse the partitions

You need to figure out what the primary default boot partition is and if I were you I would install EasyBCD on the Win7 partition and make it the default so you have some control if the Remix OS screws up your system.

The Mini partition wizard software allows you to create a boot cd (it uses linux but you would not know), this can be used after if your systems becomes unusable.

I have tested with my notebook, it is really fun if you want to run Android OS with your computer. My notebook (legacyboot) uses Windows boot manager dual boot setup (windows7 and LinuxMint), with this environment, Remix OS installation is very straightforward.

Remix OS 3.0 assumes you have a Windows (only) environment. And unlike Linux installation, the installer will start within Windows OS. Then Remix OS will be added to Windows Boot manager.

I think EdwardB advice is very important, as it is far more easier to let Remix OS to create multi boot setup with Windows Boot manager rather than playing with messy grub menu manual setup by yourself, which is not officially supported.

    So what I would do.

Multiboot setup if you use Grub go to 1), if you use windows boot manager go to 2)

    1) Create Windows10 /LinuxMint dual boot with Windows Boot Manager, instead of Grub if EasyBCD is really helpful

    2) Delete Android 2.? partition with Windows Disk Manager and create a partition with a drive x

You said you don't need android 2 or something, then you can install Remix OS to this partition. (all of your data of android 2 will be wiped out)

    3) then install Remix OS 3.0 to this drive x, Remix installer will add automatically Remix OS to Windows Boot manager

Alternatively you have an option to install Remix OS to an external USB Stick without messing around your hard disk.

Hope it helps. If you are not sure, please ask. Don't rush...

This doesn't seem to be a windows problem. And OP already has linux. So this doesn't seem like an opportunity to evangelise :-(

Apologies for butting in on your question but my partner has the same netbook but still running Win7 Starter. There are still ways to upgrade to Win 10 for free but how well did Win 10 work on this netbook?

At the moment I have the maximum 2 gb of ram and have replaced the hard drive with an ssd (which helped considerably) but is it worth upgrading to Win 10?

Another issue I have is that the windows licence number has partly worn away from the label on the underside. Various programs that I have run to ascertain it don't tie up with what is left in any way but I will need a genuine number should I do the upgrade. I've checked various combinations of number through the Microsoft site but they are all rejected.

Unfortunately there is no way that my partner could cope with Linux so that option is out.

    Many thanks for your help.

For free? Of course it is! Win 10 works better on small screens than 7 does IMO. Anything that runs 7 should be able to run 10.

    Hardware Performance

Hi Acer Aspire One D255 uses Atom N450, which uses the slower than my 12 years old notebook (Intel Pentium M 1.20GHz)

    Atom N450 Benchmark 296
    https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Atom+N450+%40+1.66GHz

    Intel Pentium M 1.20GHz Benchmark 298 (2004 notebook)
    https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Pentium+M+1.20GHz

Will Windows 10 Acer Aspire One D255 improve the performance? Definitely not, Microsoft is keen to add more functions through Windows update. I have tested since Windows 10 final beta, but it is true that memory usage increases massively since then.

As you have added memory and SSD, you have just managed to run Windows 7 comfortably. (I am not saying it is impossible to run Windows 10 as you have got a SSD, Everybody should use SSDs!)

I am not sure why your partner want to use Windows 10 but some general considerations.

Windows 7 will be supported until 1.2020 for security support only, which is great in terms of stability. The majority of Windows 10 update nightmare relates to new features rather than security update itself. That's why the majority of business users still stick to Windows 7.

    User interface issue
As you know, Windows10 UI is very different from Windows7. Actually Some Linux user interface is much more traditional Windows user friendly.

LinuxMint Mate 18 (support until 4.2021)

OS confusion, Application is the KING

Partially because of media marketing manipulation, naive users think OS (Operation system) is their computing itself.

Just ask, it is OK for your partner to use Firefox, Chrome, LibreOffice, VLC Player ? Then s/he is happy to use both Windows and Linux environments.

If you really want to help users to familiarise Linux, install multi platform applications as above to Windows 7 notebook. Then you will find the users are happy as long as they can use their application comfortably regardless of which OS they are using.

I am using both Windows 7 and LinuxMint, I need a Windows because I have to use Windows only applications such as Accounting software and Database packages for my business. But as far as I know, the majority of home users don't use Windows only application, especially now they use more cloud based applications.

Purely technical point of view, comfortable use of Netbook needs lightweight Linux Distributions. (or Windows XP ? lol) Initial memory usage of LinuxMint Mate is around 300MB, Windows 7/10 would be around 700MB to 1000MB. You need 4GB and Dual core CPU to run Windows comfortably. (I have kept Toshiba NB200 (1GB, hard disk) netbook with LinuxMint Mate only as Windows is too slow)

    Windows 10 privacy issues
You may not care about this issue, but even purely from the technical point of view, Windows10 uses your computer resources on behalf of Microsoft privacy collecting services in addition to computer operation itself. If you have fairly powerful computer, it does not matter, but I am not sure your CPU is very capable of these extra services.

If you would upgrade to Windows 10, I recommend Windows 7 full disk image backup first, then you can restore back to original environment just in case. Happy computing :)
