Europcar charges dispute

I am currently going back and forth with Halifax credit card regarding additional charges put through by Europcar.
I booked via Ryanair from a link they sent me from booking flights. All the information was filled in. Flight numbers and dates. No time field. They have a price guarantee and say 50% cheaper than other companies which it was when I compared.
Arrived at Gatwick and they did not have my selection. They offered a car that looked like it had seen better days then a reduced rate for an upgrade to a Mercedes for £40 additional. Which I agreed to.
When I left the car back I stood while they checked the tank was fill etc and he said no further charges.
Get my credit card bill and £85 additional charge!!
I called Europcar to dispute and said I didn't agree to additional charges and they said I was just over the 24hr period! I said this car was booked through my flight information and when I returned car he said no further charges. They said no the price was for a 24hr period not based on my flights! I said it was booked via the link I was sent and all the info was inserted with no time field! They don't want to know!!
Halifax are just saying they are taking merchants side.
Apart from anything else they have a price guarantee and if this is the case it would then apply anyway!!
Please help as to pay £170 for car hire when it should have been £45 is scandalous!

How long did you have the car for?

What time did you collect the car and what time did you return it? That is what is important, not the times of your flights.

If you picked it up at say 5pm and returned it at 4pm, no additional charge.

If you picked it up at say 5pm and returned it at 6pm, additonal 24hr charge.

Car rental is charged per 24hrs from the time of pick up. Unless there's a grace period, any excess time counts as another 24hrs.

  • Thank you for your replies. My point is I used a link and all the information was pre inserted. As it used my flight reference and so I took the quote as for the period I was there. I had got the car around 3pm and was left back at 6pm I think it was. Also they did not advise me of the additional charge when I dropped it back. He said NO additional charge. I have hired many times in USA and if there is anything due they advise then andown there and give a receipt. Also with the price they have now charged me they have broken their price guarantee!

Do a dummy booking and see what they quote for, is it per day or for the trip?

If for the trip, then call Halifax and discuss with them.
