Why should manufacturers and retailers be burdened by your unrealistic expectations though?

It's certainly not unrealistic for a printer to last a year.

I wouldn't consider it the same position, I may be swapping my well looked after hardly used printer with one that has been caned. I feel that a new one should be given to compensate the user for the hassle.

Except yours, in this scenario, doesn't work whereas the replacement they provide will!

Realistically, a "re-conditioned" replacement printer, unless it is a very high end product, is unlikely to have had much if any repair work done on it as it is just not economically viable. A very significant amount of "faulty" technology products returned have nothing wrong with them at all. At the end of the day a normally reputable manufacturer is putting their name to the fact that it will last at least to the end of your guarantee. It is not in their interest to provide something that won't as they will just get it back again.

Also, a manufacturers warranty is in addition to your statutory rights. The don't have to offer an end user one at all. If they do so it is to boost the reputation of their products so it is not in their interest to palm you off with tat.

Yes the replacement may work, but for how long?

Also there's a lot of returned technology that has an annoying intermittent fault.

A manufacturer doesn't need to offer a warranty but it will certainly upset their sales if they don't.

How long will the new one last for?

For what it's worth the device I'm using to type this post is a refurbished iPhone 6, which I got as a replacement for the one I put in the wash a couple of months after I got it back in 2014 (it wasn't free though)

The device was pristine when I got it and still works fine over 2 years later.

There's a stigma with refurbished good whoch, in my opinion, is undeserved. They're probably more reliable than new products when it comes to electronics.

Apple refurbished phones are very close to new, not sure this can be said for other manufacturers.
