What's the guarantee on a retail item worth?

What do you think the guarantee on a retail item is worth?
I'm thinking about the situation where a BIN item is sold on, say, eBay, the only difference from retail being that it doesn't have a guarantee. It seems that things get bid up far too close to full retail a lot of the time.
So supposing something retails at £100 with 1-year guarantee, what would you say it is worth on eeb without the guarantee?
Appreciate your opinions

The guarantee is worth nothing, as often it is not transferable and only valid if sold by an "official" retailer. The promise of one though is probably worth quite a bit.0

As above, the guarantee would technically be worth nothing. What the item is worth without it is whatever someone is willing to pay.
Not everyone cares about the guarantee, not everyone will want to or can go to a shop, not everyone will like every store that sells a specific item and sometimes things are store specific or OOS in numerous places and sometimes things are OOS everywhere or it's old stock no longer sold elsewhere. So items can be worth as much or even more than retail with a guarantee while other items will be worth less.0 -
On the guarantee front you can register your item online. Though they often want to know where you purchased it. Though unless it's a major supplier with a VAT number with purchase receipt then often the guarentee won't be honoured.
Though a lot of manufacturers registering pages I've seen there is a tick box received as gift.0 -
Though the reality of selling things on EBAY you are giving a 30 day guarantee as the buyer has that time to open a EBAY case!0

Go onto ebay and choose sold / completed listings and see what the item sells for.
Although location and having the right buyer at the right time.
I bought an item off ebay for £40 and did not use it and resold it for ... 99p

Ebay do NOT give a 30 day guarantee. They are quite explicit in this.
A case can be opened 30 days after latest or actual delivery date, for a SNAD, but SNAD is not something that develops a fault but something that is faulty on delivery, or is faulty on FIRST use.0 -

I think you will find if the item develops a fault you as the seller will be having your funds reversed out. I had one recently after 27 days. The item clearly been working up until then fine. Could been misuse by the buyer.
Buyer opened a case stating they just discovered the fault as purchased as Birthday gift as only just discovered it.
There is the buyer guarentee. You are giving 30 days guarentee, if you like it or not as a seller!0 -
There is no 30 day guarantee. Have a read of the t&c of the Ebay money back guarantee, it doesn't cover the item for 30 days.
Your buyer explained he found only just found the fault. Therefore he is covered and he is covered if he finds the fault within the first 30 days. It is not the same as using it for 29 days and it breaking on the 30th. That would not be covered. Using it for the first time on the 29th day and finding it is faulty, is covered.
If your buyer only found the fault after 5 months, he could open the case on Paypal. That doesn't mean he has had 5 months guarantee, it means he has found the fault within the time Paypal give the buyer. Paypal give 180 days.
I am sure even you can see the difference.0 -

In practice Ebay do give a guarantee
I sold something to a buyer in Hungary on 27th December, he needed it urgently for a holiday. On 26th Jan I got a return request with 'defective / doesn't work' - buyer in his notes said he had used it on holiday and developed problems.
I get the item back and find it had been dropped, with dents and a gouge in the metal. I have no choice whatsoever to issue a full refund as the funds are held. There is no real way to appeal this as Ebay ask for photos then turn around and say photos are no use, and won't accept them.
Not only did Ebay give him a guarantee, he got an 'accidental damage' guarantee, far exceeding the statutory guarantee for a manufacturer defect.
Essentially, I have taken a 300.00 loss on this. Not decided how to approach it yet..if this was someone in the UK, I would have recovered funds via small claims.0 -
