WMA to MP3

Options
Hello, without baffling me with science is there an easy way for me to play cd's that a friend has put onto a flash drive from her computer. I have copied them onto i tunes on my Mac where all my other music is stored and they now won't play. The friends computer isn't a Mac so I now realise this is the problem.

Can I do this without having to ask her to copy them again in a different format?

Many thanks for any help put in simple language for me.

I don't know much about Macs, but this might work:

(Oh -- or did you actually want them to appea in iTunes?)
  • Hi, yes I do want them in i tunes as that is where all my other downloaded music is, on a Mac.

    Thanks

There's an amount of chatter on Google that suggests that WMA files can be imported into iTunes on Mac.

    e.g.

    I have 'freemake video converter'

Good for converting video formats - there is also an 'Audio' option and a crApple destination option which I have never tried.

Careful when you install that. At the same time, it will try and install several tons of other cräp you don't want or need.
  • Thanks peeps, no further forward then at the moment.

If what you typed is what you have actually done then that is the problem.

Did you actually drag and drop the files from the USB stick to iTunes?

There are two ways to fix this.

Open iTunes then import the tracks from the USB stick, from the menu File > Add to iTunes, or use the keyboard shortcut cmd O. This will convert the files into whatever format you have told iTunes to use and should sort it out.

If you no longer have the USB stick you can import them into iTunes from wherever you put them, even if that's in the iTunes folder. This will leave you with two copies, an MP3 you can play and WMA which you can't. You can then delete the original WMA files.

Or, you can open file manager go to the music directory, in there will be the iTunes directory, Open it and you will see the iTunes Media directory, inside there is a directory called Automatically Add to iTunes. Put the files in there and iTunes will do the rest.
One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.
  • Thanks so much Mr Toad. That sounds like a plan.

Yes I do still have still have the flash drive that my friend saved 32 cd's on for me. I did do drag and drop but must admit I made heavy weather doing it. My son told me what to do last weekend but it didn't seem as simple as he made it sound when I came to do it. (He didn't know that the copy would come in WMA format). I will try to do what you have suggested.

I inserted the flash drive into the usb port in the car today where it played everything perfectly so I know the original copying was ok. It must have been the way I did the transfer. I will have another go either tonight to tomorrow and let you know if I am more successful.

Thanks again to all for your input.

I don't do Macs, but whatever you do, find a way to play what you've got in the format it's in, rather than converting it again.

Sound quality converting to a lossy format like wma and then to another lossy format like mp3 will be horrible.
  • Oh dear, I seem to have made a hash of this completely now. I can't play any of my previously saved music on i tunes. All the album covers are still there but it says The song could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it? This comes up no matter which album or song I click on.

I do have a back up of everything on my mac so hopefully it won't be a problem to do a re install to a previous date before I started all this music downloading.

Its beyond my capabilities but errant son will hopefully sort me out when he comes home next.

    Thanks for all help given.
