Photo copyright lawyers, websites etc

Has anyone got any experience of website photo copyright?

I have had a random message from RB Copyright, and initially thought it was spam so didn't call back. I have now started some searches and found my own images in a lot of places online. What would be the best way to go about this?

Has anyone used a company like them?

My site is www.danfrazergardening.co.uk not a plug... just incase anyone wants to use it to check for themself etc

  • You never watermarked your photos.. so you'll really struggle to prove you didn't steal the photos rather than the other way around.

Send them a cease and desist email and expect your email to get sent to their spam folder and ignored.

A company randomly contact you to say your images are being used elsewhere? How did they know the images are yours and not someone elses?
You could have copied them or you may have used a web designer who owned the images and they used them on several sites.

Im thinking they will want paying to send a few letters and you will hear no more.

I've sent out a series of emails, and already had 2 companies call or email back to apologise and they're contacting their web site providers to get my pictures removed.

That's one problem with taking good photos and putting them online!

So will you be watermarking them in future so that it's less likely that you'll have problems?

Edit: I see you have at least one watermarked photo already, so perhaps it's a work in progress now.

Having the original RAW files with EXIF data intact would go a long way, of course.

Anyone who watermarks their photos like the OP has clearly doesn't take photos using RAW mode.

Done in a rush last night. No idea what raw mode even is! I do, of course, have the original files.
  • dan, I'm going off topic here since I was once a web-dev a long time ago: There's far too much text on your site.

Standard rule is to take what you've written, then get rid of half of it.

e.g. don't make me read a paragraph of text on your contact page. Tell me your number and the hours you are available. Anything else is superfluous.

RAW mode is what higher end cameras use as a format that is uncompressed, and contains the original data from the sensor. You can use this with digital darkroom software to get higher quality output than the jpeg that is normally produced (automatically)

Why are you rushing your website content? A watermark shouldn't be smack in the middle of an image either - the idea is to mark the photo, but without ruining the use of it. You could always take some new photos since Spring is around the corner.
