Upgrade with EE?

Some years ago I entered a contract with EE. At the time they were offering 25% discount for civil servants. It is not offered now but I still have it as I have been upgrading to a new contract each time renewal is due. If I do not upgrade I lose the discount and will not get it back at a later date. Having the discount means that over 2 years an iPhone 7 with EE will cost less than buying one separately and getting a sim only deal.

So if I keep using the iPhone 6 and get a sim only deal for it I cannot go back to the 25%discount, if and when the handset fails. What things should I consider when my current contract (iPhone 6) runs out as to whether it's a good deal to keep the discount?

Are you sure? I have a contract which has run for several years with a (albeit different) discount. I gave notice near the end of the minimum term thinking the discount would disappear, but then questionned my assumption and carefully checked. I discovered the discount would continue so I rescinded the notice. Both contract and discount are still there.
