Charges for 0844 numbers - Getting out of a contract

I have read quite a few posts about charges being introduced on 0844xxx numbers shortly, after which they will no longer be a oart of the monthly inclusive minutes. Some forumers have also stated that if and when this happens, subscribers will have the option of terminating their contract.
When I got my 12 month contract with CPW-O2 about 4 months ago, I also got a free phone along with it. If I terminate the contract after they change the charges, what happens to the phone? Do I get to keep it, or do I have to return it?
Can anyone please advise?
