Following on from a thread here I thought it was time we liven up this board and wondered if an Internet Cafe would fit the bill.
Tonight I watched the BBC2 programme regarding VOIP (it came from Edinburgh and they didn't ask me ) and it featured some SS testing SKYPE one from an Internet Cafe and another using her laptop at home.
So, how about it folks, we don't want that Pal (bored guide from Pensions) thinking all we do in here is knit

I watched that programme too! It was great, but as I am already a user of Skype I can recommend it highly! I bought my Skype Phone (looks just like an ordinary phone but plugs into USB port on your computer) a few weeks ago from Maplins (£39.99) and I have been enjoying 'no phone bill' ever since! I now make all my phone calls via Skype phone. I pay 1p a minute to call any landline in the UK and 'nothing' to call anyone anywhere in the world via Broadband. It's fantastic and will save you hundreds of pounds. I regularly call mobiles in the UK on it too and you won't believe how little it costs. I loaded £10 into my Skype a/c 3 weeks ago, have made so many calls and balance has only gone down by £1. That's phoning a regular landline number daily at peak time for around 15 minutes a day and mobiles and chatting for long time etc. Try it and see! :j

As MSE Andrea were chatting last night on MSN during the programme about VOIP so I downloaded the software and we had a hilarious hour or so while I tried to find and set up a microphone. Before we got this fixed I was able to hear Andrea but had to type on MSN but eventually we were able to speak and found it great fun.
Many years ago I tried a similar programme but it was very bad reception with echo and you both had to make sure the other had finished speaking, however, Skype was as clear as a bell. I have already been on the phone to a couple of friends to get them signed up to try it.
Telephone costs are obviously a bit of a passion of mine and I have been an enthused user of 18866 for 18 months or so and will now look more into Skype and the 18866/1899 versions and think about getting an actual phone to use with this and a better headset for the laptop.
You can read Martin's article about it here and the software only takes minutes to download from https://www.skype.com.0 -
Right, we need a name for this Internet Cafe so any ideas?

Thought for the day: There is more money being spent on breast implants and viagra than there is on Alzheimer's research. This means that by 2030 there will be a large retired population with perky boobs and lots of staying power but absolutely no recollection of what to do with them.0 -
NO, no, no, I have enough bother being a parent without being a Grannie :rotfl:0

couldn't agree more - hopefully I'm not in danger of that for a good while either (the threats of 'don't you dare make me a granny or else' might have helped just a teeny bit)0 -
