    My advice:

    1) Invest in knowledge and practical skills, these things are always tradable and are the most difficult for others to take away from you.

    2) Don't grow old.

A week's supply of non-perishable food, bottled water and toilet paper. A first aid kit and some paracetamol.

Beyond that, it really isn't worth worrying about.
And a camping stove, some gas, a water filter, some solar cells etc etc.
On a more serious note. I reckon there is currently an upsurge in interest in 'prepping' Already, the freeze-dried food market, and amazon market in water filters and survival packs seems to be a rapidly growing market place, possibly worthy of some investment.
  • Dan03, I agree you need to prepare for the next financial meltdown. However it is NOT President Trump, global warming or racism which will cause it. Are you an alarmist liberal?

Global financial meltdown may not be Bitcoin's killer app, but it sure wouldn't hurt Bitcoin.

Plenty of smart money is in Bitcoin, it has a good chance to play a major role in the future of finance and technology. It's programmable money! Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was the internet (in fact the internet took decades)... and Bitcoin will take time too but in the mean time it's an open and investible to all.

If you have a spare £1,000 invest it in Bitcoin, why not? It's unlikely to go to zero any time soon and the upside potential is huge. Although at the current price £1,000 will only buy you 1 bitcoin :D

In the last year GBP has fallen 10%-20% vs most other major global currencies. Your pounds buy you significantly less than they did. This isn't even taking into account the price rises and 'shrinkflation' right here, you're getting less for your money in the UK too. This is all measurable and just in the last year.

In the mean time bitcoin is up from £300 to £1000... A 233% rise in value.

I know where I'd rather store my wealth. Hint: not the the pound.
Bitcoin. If you haven't heard of it, you have now.

I remember early days of bitcoin when they were a few dollars, regret not diving in.
As part of a very diverse portfolio I hold dash coin, previously dark coin.I bought at app. £3, they are +£36 currently, not bad return in just over 2 yrs.

Luddites beware, the world does not stand still...

Congrats on your gain with Dash.

I had some when they were worth $2 each but sold them for $2ish too :p

For me Dash is too shady, the instamine (1.5million coins mined by creators in first 8 hours or so) and the 'masternodes' hoarding coins and receiving a large % of the new coins.

Just stinks of a get rich quick scheme from the owners. It seems to have worked as Dash has a market cap of $330,000,000 now, so congratulations to them but it's still super shady IMO.

Between December 2013 and April 2015 the price of Bitcoin in £ dropped by 75% - note that a drop of 75% requires a rise of 300% to return to the original value. What evidence have you that such a drop wont happen again? Doesnt look like a good way to safely store wealth.

If the world goes wobbly, but survives, make sure you have lots of money to invest in funds which will be shooting up in value post catastrophe. You'll be laughing all the way to the bank.

If everything goes really really wobbly, and kind of scary, there's not much you can do unless you are Richard Branson, with a private plane and airfield, and a private island to fly to. If you live in a 2-up 2-down up north, you'll be surrounded by hungry frightened people, which is normal for that area anyway. If you have a house with land, you might be able to grow your own, dig your own well, and chop down your own trees for firewood in winter. But you'll need a big gun to fend off the hungry starving riff raff. Some of them might even be quite tasty when stewed, so a recipe book would be useful.

You probably know but there is a whole industry including online forum catering for weirdoes who spend their lives planning for catastrophe. I'm sure someone will tell you what they call themselves.
