Looking at that chart to which Suki referred (Post #28), in 1948 over 80% of males over the age of 16 smoked, dropping to 75% in 1958. It wasn't until after 1982 that there more non-smoking males than smoking.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Back in the 50s I didn't know anyone who smoked ...

Wow! Well my teachers smoked when on playground duty and in the staff room. My GP had an ashtray on his desk and smoked during appointments. I went for my first ever interview for a job in early 70's and the interviewers were smoking and offered me a cigarette and seemed surprised when I didn't accept. In the pub all the bar staff smoked behind the bar - let alone the customers and I remember bus drivers smoking while they were driving. The guy who ran the Cobblers shop chain smoked as he worked and a cloud of smoke used to come out of the shop door when you went in.
I don't remember anyone who didn't smoke! Obviously some people didn't - but looking back - I'd go so far as to suggest they were a minority.

Well minor correction: our GP smoked cigars.
  • My friend has worked in the pub going on 20 years now. I live nearby and often get a message saying can I cover the bar for a pint whilst he goes out for a fag! Not complaining for a free pint!

But to be fair, he is the only person I know that smokes. Most of my work colleagues gave up eventually when they had to go outside and round to the back of the building (10 minute walk, when your break is only 20 mins!) in the winter.

I have a terrible sense of smell and only realised that the house I bought had had a smoking tenant when I took out the cupboards in the kitchen and found cigarette butts and a recent cigarette pack.

Just for randomness, I also found plastered into a fireplace some 60s football themed cigarette cards when renovating. Pity they were ruined really...

My GP did as well :)
  • To all those who have taken the time to reply, thank you for your advice.

I have been back to see the house again today - and whilst certain rooms have definitely suffered, there are a lot of positives about the house.
I am going to weigh everything up before deciding whether to put an offer in on the house.

Come on people, it's not difficult: lose means to be unable to find, loose means not being fixed in place. So if you have a hole in your pocket you might lose your loose change.

It was already being frowned on in the 70s. But in the 60s you only have to watch Mad Men to se how universal it was.

I recall (probably wrongly) smoke in cinemas being routine. Plus public transport. If you told me that polio patients wards of iron lungs had ashtrays for the attendants/ carers/nurses to use I would only be mildly surprised.

  • I was a heavy smoker back in the day but even I had to draw the line at smoking on a plane,it used to make me feel really sick and headachey.Amazing how times have changed......

  • Re the "frowned on in the 1970s"....does anyone recall the sort of date more exactly as to when it had become common knowledge about the dangers of passive smoking?
