I was wondering just how to phrase that...:rotfl:0 -
Definitely within walking distance.
I used to walk just under two miles to school.
My other half walks to work on days she isn't going to the gym (five miles).
Generally I tend to regard anything over about three miles as a short cycle rather than walking distance, but I've known people who don't cycle who will walk much further. I used to walk four miles each way to work when there was nowhere suitable to store a bike but wouldn't have regarded any further as being walking distance for a round trip to do five or six days a week.
I have neighbours who drive 500m to Tesco, I suspect maximum walking distance for them may be from the sofa to the toilet.0 -
I'd say up to a mile would qualify, but with reservations.
If I walk a mile into a town from the edge, then for the entire route I can see the landscape changing and getting more townlike, I feel like I'm walking towards town.
A mile in the country without pavements wouldn't be "walking distance" if the house were the last one in the village, then you had to walk on an unlit road without pavements, along winding lanes, where nothing changed until the last minute when you arrived at the next village.
Walking distance needs to be applied to who is doing the walking and why.
Walking a mile into a town from a house is walking distance.
Walking a mile in the country for pleasure is walking distance.
Walking a mile between bleak villages without pavements/lighting and with bendy roads and fast cars isn't "walking distance" except on sunny summer afternoons.0 -
If you have to pay for parking then walking distance of a couple of miles would be a definite advantage. Please do not quote spam as this enables it to 'live on' once the spam post is removed.
If you quote me, don't forget the capital 'M'

Hi,
We are selling a property at the moment. Personally, we feel that the description is standard copy and paste. This has been echoed by friends who have gone to the location recently and had not been before. Each one has been shocked how close it is to the city centre (description of the property makes no reference to any of this but anyone who knows the area access to google maps will know this)
From the house to the start of the city would be a three minute drive or apx 15 minute walk. Would this be too far to define it as 'walking distance' ?
The family home that we sold in 2015 was within twenty minutes walk of the city centre - we described it as 'walking distance' because I used to walk to work in the centre.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
yes its walking distance. Any serious buyer will test it if it's very important for them anyway.
For me I'd say 1.5 miles or over 20 minutes walk is pushing it.0 -
Agents shouldn't use such loose terms. How difficult is it to say 300m, or half a mile?
Lots of my local amenites are within 'walking distance' but that ignores the fact to reach most of them means walking up or down significant gradients. Half a mile on the flat isn't the same as half a mile up a 1 in 8.0 -
I'm not yet retired, but I'm less busy than I was. I now routinely walk to the local shops - a bit over a mile each way. If I don't do that, I walk at least 40 minutes anyway, so it may as well be for something useful. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0

Here's a government definition regarding walking to school for children. 3 miles sounds about right for adults too.
What is the ‘statutory walking distance’?
The ‘statutory walking distance’ is used in the UK to determine if a pupil qualifies for free school transport, or if they're considered to live close enough to walk to school. The distance is calculated as the shortest route along which the pupil – accompanied if necessary – can walk with reasonable safety, so it includes pedestrian footpaths as well as roads. The distance is calculated from the child’s permanent home to school. For children aged 8 or under the statutory walking distance is 2 miles. For children over 8 years old, the statutory walking distance is 3 miles. For further information, do contact your child’s school.0
