Selling EBAY listed item privately

Just to say people to make you aware (most probably know) that EBAY do watch everything you do!
Last night a local person messaged me via ebay with view to buying an item with an ebay system offer and a phone number saying she wanted to personal collect. I replied saying fine no problem, but didn’t action the offer.
I messaged her via text on my phone and it was arranged. I ended the listing about 2 hours after collection was made.
This morning I get the EBAY warning message of selling outside of EBAY. Basically I done them out of £4.50. It’s a warning have to watch my back now.
So just saying to others don’t assume that EBAY do not vet messages
My downfall here was probably in a number of ways
I replied back to the woman saying yes fine. I should of not replied at all via EBAY and just texted her.
I stupidly selected no longer for sale instead of saying broken or listing error in end of listing reason
I closed the listing down with an open offer outstanding.
It just those things EBAY picked up on!
Anyway just a heads up!

I had the same at the end of December and have posted about it on here. Buyer wanted to collect and said he was out in his car already and on his way, I tried to remove the immediate payment required from my listing but regardless of what I did buyer could only buy if he checked out immediately using PayPal.
He arrived, paid cash, took the item and I cancelled the item with the reason 'item is no longer for sale'. Got the warning and posted on here asking if anyone knew how long my warning stayed on my account.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Ok Sorry I didn't see that post in December!
Really a !!!! take.
It's really a shame EBAY don't put their efforts into other things like dodgy buyers or sellers.
Though, hey you can't dare do EBAY out of their sacred fees!0 -
Nesty. I had my slapped wrist identical to you last November.
a phone number in an eBay message followed by ending the listing that the message referred to.
eBay invest time money and effort in trying to prevent off site sales & loss of commission but do nothing for years if ever, if their glitched system works in their favour.0 -

Agree its all about how EBAY don't lose out. Anything they don't lose on they not interested in at all.
It's really sodding annoying. Due to my location near London. I get a few people wanting to personal collect. I suppose what EBAY are saying they are not a free gumtree site. However I see loads of listings with mobile number in them for questions etc. However, we all know the seller probably trying/will negotiate a private deal outside of EBAY.
Why do people do this. Quite simply as EBAY are taking the mick with the fees system. If it was reasonable I don't think people would bother so much. If you take a paypal payment as well you are paying 14% on any sell. It takes the biscuit IMHO.0 -
If ebay are punishing people now for this sort of thing it seems really draconian and Big Brother ish. I've sold stuff outside of their system before and never had any warnings or anything, but maybe I'll need to be more careful now!
And surely if no bids or offers have been made on an object then it still belongs to the seller and they are free to do what they like with it.
Takes the mickey big time.0 -
I have often collected stuff I have bought from ebay if its local or too large for posting, that shouldnt be a problem but you should never go "off" ebay. They want their cut and that is fair enough as they are running a business not a charity and you leave yourself open to scammers I have to say I have bought loads of stuff from ebay and (to date) never had a problem.0

I know they are not running a charity, as I pay a lot of fees. It's not as if I am using their service and paying nowt!
However, if someone is collecting an order to protect myself from scammers, then I have to insist on cash.
I have their cash in my hand, without any chance of it being screwed back out from ebay.
So then naturally I want to automatically give 10% of that cash away and risk a possible negative if the buyer decides to get unfair shirty over something?
I saved £4.50. However, next month, I'll be paying probably £200 in fees to EBAY, so they need not worry about losing out!0 -

Legally if Ebay introduced the buyer, then you should pay the fee. That is regardless of how they pay.
Your £200 are for introductions that they can track via the Paypal payment. Paying by cash isn't any cheaper for Ebay, they've still got you the buyer. It's Paypal that don't need to benefit.
Cash sales should be recorded as such, pay your Ebay fee for the sale and be done.0 -
Two ways of looking at it I suppose, the money saving way and the other way.0

Its not really money saving, it is avoiding paying for a service. If you have your hair cut and then run out at the end without paying, then you have been provided with a service, that you haven't paid for. Ebay may be a huge company and I am sure £4.50 is in insignificant amount to them but just admit you were provided with a service you didn't pay for. Don't try and dress it up as money saving.0
