What is the pop up? First step would be to run Malwarebytes. It's unlikely to be a virus so Macafee wouldn't have stopped it anyway, although I have no idea how well regarded that is as an AV these days.0

I was thinking the OP meant the news-flash type pop-ups? I don't know if they can be stopped. I have Adblock installed and that doesn't stop them.
McAffee is quite a resource-hungry AV suite. Changing to another AV program might well speed up the computer if it is older or low-spec.0 -

No popups on the BBC site unless there is a breaking news story and it's not really a 'popup'. can be got rid of by just hitting the X and it doesn't come back.
Too be honest they aren't that frequent or intrusive to warrant any action.

Free AV's are not worth it: their databases are always way behind. I use Kaspersky Total Security, always rated as best by the industry. McAfee is total rubbish, always has been. There is a reason why it is installed on computers by manufacturers as a free trial. If you uninstall it, make sure you download the correct McAfee uninstaller:

Have you run Adware cleaner? Follow that with Hitman Pro:
https://www.hitmanpro.com/downloads.aspx
Those two should remove any nasties from your system. Then, if you want Kaspersky:

First run of Kaspersky will also carry out a full scan.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.
