HP Laptop Screen Repair

Options
Hi

I am a fairly old HP6910p - its old but serves me well. However last night I picked it up from the edge and it cracked the outer edge casing of the screen and the screen 'frazzled' and became pixelated. The screen has no cracks etc on it but obviously the crack on the outer edge has damaged it some how. It works fine on a monitor etc so not worried about it.

Getting a replacement screen is impossible and the cost of a new 6910p is around £60 so thinking about shelling out on a new one. However I then realised my wife had a similar HP model that I bought for her years ago - it was a slightly different model - silver in colour and was the HP6930 model.

Its in fairly decent nick - my question is can I replace the screen using the HP6930 - is it compatible? How easy is it to do? (not great with hardware to be honest)

Any ideas?

An eBay search for your screen:
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR4.TRC1.A0.H0.XHP+6910p+screen.TRS0&_nkw=HP+6910p+screen&_sacat=0

    And your wifes:
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR11.TRC1.A0.H0.XHP+6930+screen.TRS0&_nkw=HP+6930+screen&_sacat=0

Shows that they're both 14" WXGA screens. Looks like you can replace yours for around £25. Have a look at some of the photos of the different screens on eBay to see if they use the same connectors, without having to take both computers apart.
They'll be fiddly little connectors, and you should of course do all your work on a cloth to make sure things don't get scratched, but a website like ifixit.com should help with disassembly instructions.

Great thanks. Managed to sort it - just changed my mrs laptop screen and worked a treat.

I also thought about the fact that this thing only has 2GB RAM and there is a 2GB RAM in my Mrs' laptop. Can I move this 2GB from my wifes laptop on to mine?

You really need to check the spec of your laptop, to a) see how many RAM slots it has, b) what size RAM each slot can take, and c) whether the RAM in the Mrs' laptop is the same spec as that in yours.

Providing you have a spare slot and the wifes Ram is of the same type (eg PC2 or PC3) then it should be fine.

Sometimes, different brands dont play together too well, but no harm in plugging it in and seeing for yourself

It will either work or it wont :)

I tired updating the RAM in some obscure DELL machine. Nothing i tried worked reliably. It would sometimes boot fine and then appear to work then suddenly crash. Then sometimes it would boot up. refit the original stick of RAM and it was fine.

To add to the issues they had locked and masked out the RAM timings.

I have an old Hp NC6320, the model below NC6310 was a lesser spec and had a slower cpu. the model above mine was NC6330, had a faster cpu than mine, and think a bigger drive too. The other electronics were the same

If 6930p is working PC then you might switch from 6910p to 6930p, as the latter is better construction and more powerful CPU, but the former may be better keyboard ((I had both12inch 2510p and 2530p as well)

I am not able to add URL link here as a new user, sorry.

It seem that 6910p 6930p uses compatible LCD,

search ebay both 6910p and 6930p together,

    Memory:
Both 6910p and 6930p use DDR2 memory, both are compatible.

I agree that your HP notebooks have an excellent quality, (I have kept 12inch version of HP 2510p and 2530p) Hope you will continue to use top quality notebook!.

    Reference: Service and maintenance Manual

    use manualslib site

Option: SSD upgrade as a replacement of slow hard disk.

If you really want to boost your notebook performance, please consider a SSD (Solid State Drive as an replacement of the old sluggish hard disk

This is the 2008 MacBook demonstration but this video shows SSD 2GB is SIGNIFICANTLY FASTER than HARD DISK 8GB

youtube : CompuRAM -- Performance Test HDD vs SSD vs RAM-Upgrade MacBook Pro (15-inch, late 2008)

6910P, 6930p is a decent business top end notebook, and use a SATA standard You will be amazed if you have got an SSD.

I have used 2008 desktop, 2008 notebook, and 2009 notebook, all of them have a SSD. Practically they are much faster than a brand new hard disk based computer.
