Eve mattresses on ebay, sold as new (in fact used?)

I have been tempted by an Eve mattress recently, for those who don't know they are one of many 'next generation' mattress that come vacuum packed in a box. They are made in the UK and claim to be the worlds most comfortable mattress. There are a couple of threads on this forum with people discussing the company and lots of mixed on opinions about the mattresses. A common marketing strategy for most of these vacuum packed mattresses companies seems to be to offer extensive, (allegedly) no obligation to buy, trail at home, money back periods.

I need a new mattress but Eve's are fairly expensive and a little bit out of my price range at the moment. I thought Id have a quick look on ebay as there may be people selling Eve mattresses at a discount price. Slight factory seconds or *UNUSED* customer returns etc, new without packaging and the likes which many people buy as job lots ans sell online.

As expected there are indeed a number of sellers selling Eve mattresses on ebay which they claim to be new.

One such listing states the condition of the mattress is "New: other", however they go on to explain in the listing that its been used a handful of times in a spare room. So not new in any sense of the word. Contradiction right off the bat.
A photograph of a mattress stood up in what appears to be a small bedroom supports this claim. However, when you look at the sellers other items for sale, they have another Eve mattress in a different size listed with the exact same wording. This seller has sold 18 of these in the last few months. That's a lot of spare rooms

Another seller also lists these as "New: other", and states in their listing that the mattresses are new and unused but not in the original packaging due to the vacuum packaging having failed, leading to the original box being destroyed by the mattress on expansion. I found this pretty plausible, and being the first such listing I had seen I was very tempted to get one given that they are less than half the RRP of a mattress directly from Eve. But since seeing the other sellers listings, and given that there must be a surplus of thousands of used Eve mattresses due to the 100 day trial, I am no longer convinced.

I think Eve must be either offloading these in job lots to be sold on as used, or they are being sent to be destroyed and ending up on the grey market somehow. Perhaps it's even Eve themselves masquerading as lots of separate, private sellers (**this is all pure speculation and I am not actually suggesting it's is actually the case!**)

Many of these mattresses would indeed be easy to pass off as new, having possibly been returned within a small time frame. Even ones that where returned nearer to the cut off point would have been looked after by the people who had them, not wanting Eve to find reason to reject the return.

So this thread was just a heads up for anyone who might happen to be in the market for a mattress, or anything else that is sold online by a third party as 'new'. Be careful!

I am not aware of this company, no. The sellers I am referring to in my post appear to be just small individual private sellers.
They seem to be buying very large lots of these Eve mattresses and selling them on. Nothing wrong with that in itself, I just don't agree with things being sold as new which appear to in fact be used. Especially a mattress....

Eve mattresses are sold in the USA and Europe and have had slick marketing campaigns in recent times on social media. There is mixed opinions on whether the mattresses are in fact any good, or whether they are worth the money. One member on another thread on this forum suggested that they are able to manipulate reviews to make the product appear better than it is. Iv watched a lot of reviews on youtube for myself and Id whilst I'd be happy to take punt on one at the right price, I probably wouldn't pay the RRP for one.

If a business is masquerading as a private seller then I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole . At the very least buy from a registered business seller as you then have a right to a return if you change your mind (within limits and assuming item sent back in same state as purchased).

I'm not saying that they are doing this, I just wonder what Eve do with the probably tens of 1000's of mattresses which are returned to them through the 100 night trial and I think its a bit suspicious that there are so many on ebay being sold as new. They may well be sending them to be destroyed or selling them off in job lots to be stripped and recycled for use as other things, I'm only speculating :)

I just found it interesting and thought others might too.

If you did buy one in good faith from a seller on ebay, sold as new, and on receipt of it had reason to suspect it had been slept on, I wonder where you would stand with regards to protection through ebay and paypal?

Not that I am intending to get one. Just a thought

Many small businesses have access to company returns and sell as small businesses out of a spare bedroom. However, they properly register as a business or show they understand consumer law.

But you mention that an e bay seller has sold 18 'spare room' mattresses! Now, unless they live in a palace...this has to be a business seller.

Dob them in to Eve and Ebay - one or the other party may be concerned that consumers are being misled in their name

I've just read the new users that have posted on here about them.
I think you are falling prey to digital marketing companies who use Mse for promotion.

Pinkypants stated they don't say what grade the memory foam is .
Why not contact eve and ask them? They have livechat
Then a decision could be made on whether to buy one at all?
Come back and tell us what they say.
While you are there, also ask them what " award" these " award winning mattresses" have won.

This type of behaviour is really common on Ebay , I expect lots of people are buying these and flogging them as " as new" without using the " used" category
