friend won bid for motorbike on ebay, paypal accepted..the seller has 0 feedback. Received email asking for payment by moneygram, seller has been emailed to ask if could pay cash on pick up,no reply.(300 miles away).
seemed a bit suss so googled address turns out its a B&B telephoned the number for the address & asked to speak to the seller nobody of that name resides there.
emailed the security centre at ebay they replied saying that transaction insured for up to £5000 & was fine to go ahead.
The problem is if it was paid by moneygram (£3,750) & turns out there is no bike how long would it take to have cash refunded?
What do you think? I feel uncomfortable about this my instincts tell me something not quite right.
THANX

The advice is NEVER to pay with Moneygram. If in doubt don't deal, esp for that amount. I assume Ebay were referring to paying by Paypal, although sounds like you received some bad advice.
Would you hand over £3000 in cash to a bloke in a pub who says he will come back in half an hour with the bike? Not much difference here, except you haven't even got his description, address, contact details...0 -

I agree with you, I just wanted someone else to confirm my suspicions. If it is all above board they should have no problem with cash on pick up.
And why say accept paypal in listing & not when try to use paypal?

If i was the seller then the option to have hard cash in my hand would be the obvious way to go with no commission taken on the money transfer or Pay Pal.
As the other posters have said have nothing to do with this scammer unless you can meet face to face.0 -
i cant believe ebay would give that advice given the circumstances.
what chance to people have when they are encouraging an obvious fraud!0 -

Ebay specifically forbid the use of moneygram, so I am confused as to why they would email and suggest it can be used.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. OP, maybe you could post ebay's message here?
It sounds to me as though they're barking up the wrong tree, as per usual. My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -
In any event, with a purchase that large I would want to see and inspect the bike, and if it wasn't as described or I had any doubts I would take a neg for walking away."If a man says something, but there is no woman to hear him, is he still wrong?"0
