Liquids at security

I thought separation and identification of liquids was mandatory in cabin baggage in all international airports these days.

But I flew back from Accra this week and they weren't interested. I asked some other travellers I met and they said the same thing, that they also asked, 'Don't you want liquids separately?' and were told not; everything just went in the cabin baggage and through the scanner.

Is this normal?

I don't know about America but in U.K. All airports have this requirement, even the tiny domestic ones. In Most other airports I've been in nobody else bothers.

    It depends.

We've found that Greek airports don't seem that bothered but Hong Kong and Bali insisted on the liquids being put in a separate box to go through the scanner.

All UK airports we've flown from are very hot on this.
  • I forgot to get my liquids out of my hand luggage in Malta recently.

My bag got a massive search. But they ignored the liquids. It seems I'd overdone my electric cables.

When I got home I discovered a Swiss Army knife in one of the pockets. I'd forgotten about it and they missed it completely!

My experience is the same as pollycat, Mediterranean airports (majorca, crete, zante) didn't care about liquids at all but UK airports were really careful.

Jo'burg & Cape Town are very lapse still on liquids on international and domestic flights at security. It really is scary after so many incidents it is still so loose.

I have travelled a fair bit, and have not yet seen an airport where liquids did not have to be separated.

I just don't think about it anymore. Liquids go in one bag, electronics, cables, power packs etc. in another, and Ipad/phone in another. I usually, ahem says she smugly.... sail through security, they can see everything!

Then when I get to the other side I shove the liquids, electronics (apart from phone and tablet) into the hand luggage and away I go.

I see from other posts that some airports are not so strict. But you never know which ones they are, so better to keep to the drill imo!!

Even at Orlando three weeks ago they told me to keep my liquids, lap top and electrical in my bag and not to place in a tray, just directly on the X-ray belt. I guessed they were trying a new system in my checkpoint lane as adjacent in another lane passengers still were having to follow the old separation rules.

Like melanzana I am normally regimented in my approach and have everything ready to go through security. This time round I was having to repackage it all at the security lane.
