Tree officer comeing to look at tree

Options
hi does anybody know the best way to convince the tree officer to let me cut down a tree in my garden. It is about 30 foot tall and it is overpowering the garden. My neighbour has also complained to me that it is killing her grass (the tree is just inside my boundary) It is the only large tree in the close where i live and it is in a conservation area. I have checked and there is no preservation order on the tree
thanks

  • Don't think there's a way of convincing them, but do explain about complaints from the neighbour. I live in a conservation area too & my neighbour was allowed to take a large tree down & replace it with something much smaller, so if all else fails you could maybe offer that? It had to be a full grown tree though to 'maintain the look of the area' but is actually a huge improvement.
A friend of mine was recently told by the tree officer that conifers are not included in the rules on conservation areas, but that could be area specific.

What type of tree is it?

I recently had the tree officer around in regard to 2 sycamores & he had no objection at all.
  • Was the tree there when you bought the house / when the neighbour bought the house? Trees are too beautiful to chop down.

The problem is that in a conservation area, the trees are included too, so it's more difficult to get permission to cut them down. Maybe he'll suggest it's cut back rather than cut down altogether.

Remember that with large trees that are close to houses, there can be problems with subsidance/heave if they are cut down, so the officer may take this into account too.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
  • Hi ya,

It will depend on the type and size of the tree.

Sycamore's are considered 'weed' trees, silver birch too plus some others.

The size = height, spread and density. The height is a problem as bits that come off can travel long distances so there will be the option to reduce the height if debris will damage buildings. The spread of branches and roots can cause damage so these to can be reduced. The density because of the reduction of light to your property and surroundings.

All parts of the persusive discussion. Tea and biscuits also work on any tree-fella.

    all best
  • hi thanks for all the replies, it is a fur tree and it is nearly as wide as it is tall, the trunk is approx 2-3 foot thick, it has grown through and above the telephone wires but unfortunately it has not damaged them. The tree was present when we bought the property, the same with the neighbour. whats the best tree to replace it with, i think this is the best option. I would like something that will not grow to big and spread to far.

On further measurement it is approx 40-50 feet tall
    thanks

If it is not a native species, it is poisonous or if it's a danger to kids or causing damp the client officer should say yes. Otherwise get the tea and cakes ready for his visit, Replace with a small native species that is good for birds and does not grow too big like a service tree, Bird Cherry, dwarf crab apple or hawthorn, rowan, you should swing it.

If it is a fir tree, it is unlikely to be a native species, so there will probably be no objections. Why do you want to plant another tree in its place?

can anyone advise me about neighbours trees? the trees are large and immediately next to a boundary wall (roots are pushing in wall) and branches are growing over our garage and house roof, we have spoken to neighbours gardeners to speak to their client (they have a block of flats on their land) but nothing has happened, who do we complain to to get something done?

You are entitled to cut the overhanging branches back to the property boundary line, but I think you have to offer the branches you have cut off to the owner of the tree, to see if they want them.
