That's why you need to get the other road owners involved. Delegate 2 or 3 of you to go together to see him, or hold a tea party (with cake) and ivite all the owners round as well as him, to discuss road maintenance. Safety in numbers.

I would agree with the cake approach too, even if he is a twit, but ultimately he has to acknowledge your right to pass and repass freely, without hindrance, regardless of boundaries etc.

If cake gets him to that point faster, it's worth it.

Nesting season is officially 1st April. Not sure the birds know, though!
  • He's fallen out with most over the years (therein lies the problem...) but there's another new person I can rope in, I hope..
  • Most people can be a bit "nervous" at standing up to characters like him I find. It's not nice having to do so. I've been in that position myself (ie in current house) and there were two choices:
    - stand up to them
    OR
    - have them walk all over me

...and me a woman on my own.

Ultimately, you have to hold your nerve, slap a neutral expression on your face (and possibly a pair of sunglasses to hide expression in your eyes) and walk confidently past them and ignore the glares and only half-muffled comments, etc, etc. Worst case analysis - maybe even having to ignore a solicitors letter and maintain "confident attitude/straight face".

Most times - people like this turn out to be "empty vessels" and are "full of sound and fury" but nothing to back them up.

Ask him to provide evidence of this "legal" boundary or to explain why he thinks the boundary is where he thinks it is.

If he still refuses to cut it and you choose the legal route talk to the other residents. £1200 of legal costs is £100 each. Worth it for a permanent solution.

It's worth trying tea and cake but some people are so certain they are right there is no reasoning. I'd be inclined to get a contractor in with a tractor and flail mower and just cut it back - probably £50 or so. But as has been said it needs to be done in the next few weeks or postpone the work until autumn.
