Down/feather coat too heavy

Options
Hi all,

Just bought a great winter coat in the sale, but it's 50% down, 50% feather and it feels really heavy on my shoulders. Bought it online and was not aware that a higher feather content makes it heavy. Would rather not return it, as it was such a good price.

Any advice on how i can make it feel less heavy/bulky to wear please?

Thank you.

You bought a coat that you don't like wearing and want to keep it because you perceive it is an object of value due to it being cheaper than it normally would be....
Short of lifting weights to become stronger, no, there isn't a way to make it lighter.

The only way I can think of to make it lighter would be to let some of the feathers out, but unless you're an expert seamstress that could go horribly wrong.

You might get used to it if you wear it regularly but to be honest, you're probably better of returning it and buying something which is more suitable for your needs. Otherwise you're likely to end up with something which takes up space and rarely if ever get worn because it is n't comfortable.

The only way to make it lighter would be to remove some of the down, in which case it will be less effecitve as it won't be as warm, plus, as fairylights says, it's potentially a lot of work and very messy, and unless you are very expert in sewing the chances of wrecking it are pretty high.

If you aren't out of time to retuen it and get a refund I'd do that. If you are, I'd try to re-sell it now and recoup some of the money.

Could it be because you're not used to wearing coats like that?

Could you just be thinking it's heavy because by the very nature of feather/down coats they are bulky?

I've got a 70% feather/30% down full length coat and a 30% feather/70% down jacket and the coat doesn't seem to be discernably any heavier than the jacket.

Both are considerably lighter than another padded coat I've got.

As for being able to do anything about it, apart from taking it apart (and if it's anything like my 2, it will be sewn in channels so a massive amount of work) I think your only other option is to return it.

If it didn't like it, i would return it. Really simple and no need for this thread, but glad you had the opportunity to unleash your flippant comment on me.

Thanks everyone else for your actual genuine advice.
  • I think you will probably get used to it pretty quickly.

I have a faux suede jacket that weighs a ton, but it is one of my favourites now!

But is the fact that you really like the coat going to outweigh your feeling that it's heavy?
If it isn't, then no matter how great a bargain it was, it will be a waste of money because it will just sit in your wardrobe - and they do take up a lot of space.

What are your plans for the coat?
Wear it as it is or try to take some of the filling out?

If you like it, I would just keep wearing it until you're used to it. The very first people to wear clothes probably thought they were heavy but we got used to it! You could try to trick yourself maybe - put something really heavy in the pockets and/or drape something heavy around your shoulders and wear it like that for half an hour, then take off the added weight and see how much better you feel.

Ha Reminds me of when full length sheepskins were all there rage, and me 5 ft and a tiny bit all of 7 stone, weighed a ton

Took a while getting used to the weight but it also made a great blanket during the cold of winter

Take it to dressmaker and get some of the weight removed
